Optometry is a healthcare profession that is autonomous, educated, and regulated (licensed/registered), and optometrists are the primary healthcare practitioners of the eye and visual system who provide comprehensive eye and vision care, which includes refraction and dispensing, detection/diagnosis and management of disease in the eye, and the rehabilitation of conditions of the visual system World Council of Optometry.

Optometrist manages most of the eye problems and diseases that can be taken care of in primary eye care settings.

It provides the case for delivering high quality, advanced and equitable eye health and vision care for patients worldwide.

Thus, optometry can be considered as a primary vision care unit, providing screening services and well management for patients with vision problems and referring only those patients to ophthalmologists and medical practitioners who need specialized care – WCO

it was established in 1998. it said that it was established by the help of Auckland University, New Zealand.

What you will Be (or learn)? 

It contains four phases of course. Students will be competent, compassionate and community-oriented optometrically trained manpower.
Who is capable of providing primary eye care, identify ocular and related systemic illness to be referred to medical practitioners.

What are the aims/ objectives of Optometry in Nepal? 

To provide knowledge and develop practical skills in primary eye health care in the field of visual and optical science for high school graduates.

It will develop skills in :

  1. Ocular/Systemic history taking and physical examinations
  2. Measuring the visual functions of the patients
  3. General as well as specific eye examinations
  4. Correlating different structures and functions of the human body
  5. Assessing the ocular health and recognize ocular signs of systemic diseases
  6. Prescribing and fitting appropriate visual aids
  7. Referring patients for medical and ophthalmic consultations as appropriate
  8. Undertaking independent scientific studies and critically analyze scientific works of literature

What is the duration of the Course? 

Four years of Academic course

What is the Admission Criteria?

  1. At least 50% in aggregate in certificate Final Examination (+2 With Biology) from Tribhuvan University or 10+2 with Biology recognized by HSEB, Nepal or A level or equivalent.
  2. The candidate should pass the Common Entrance Examination (CEE)  held by Examination Nepal Medical Commission Board (NMEB) Candidates will be admitted according to the number of seats ‘Merits based’.

What is the number of Students admitted per years? 

The number of seats to each phase will be no less than 9 Nepali students. Where are 7 seats partially scholarship, 3 seats (full payment) & 1 seat (foreign student).
